Keeping Farming Economically Viable

Blueberry Farmer with cash

Lighthouse Ag sees its mission as finding and integrating existing AgTech and democratizing technology to all-sized agriculture organizations (Making AgTech Simple).

During a conversation last year, one of the AgTech companies we interviewed said the challenge around regenerative agriculture is to gain sustainability benefits while keeping farming economically viable.

This comment was insightful, so I asked some regenerative farmer friends about regenerative agriculture's problems and what hinders regenerative farming from being economically viable. Compared to conventional ag, the simplified takeaway was that regenerative ag is less input-intensive, has a similar yield after time, and has higher labor requirements from more field passes (e.g., cover crops, manure, etc.) and higher data capture, analysis, and reporting requirements (compliance) to benefit from premium pricing opportunities.

The logical answer to handle more passes is robotic tractors, which are only partially available today but will continue progressing and becoming more affordable.

The logical answer to reducing manual data collection from compliance requirements is data automation from sensors/IoT. Having traveled the world, I know that individual sensor/IoT technologies to collect most data exist, but you must find them. When you find them, they still need integration/standardization work to play nicely and combine with data from all farm areas to expose their potential to reduce labor and improve the collected data.

No matter how many automated sensors you have, sometimes, you must muddy your boots. In those cases, we look to AgTech technologies that reduce steps, integrate into the larger data pool, and, in many cases, provide more granular, timely, and affordable data. These are all benefits, leading to better decisions faster, more cost-efficiency, and more time to farm.

Why am I bringing all of this up? Lighthouse Ag has already taken steps to connect Agtech products in various global markets to improve how organizations farm and purchase solutions. However, we need your assistance in identifying more potential automation technologies hiding in plain sight, which could reduce labor, enhance data analysis, and simplify farming.

I am excited to hear about Agtech, which improves your farm life, or if Lighthouse Ag can Make Agtech Simple for your organization.
