Data Before All Others

Lighthouse Ag "Makes Agtech Simple" by being your single source for AgTech advice, solutions, and support in the Americas. To do this, Lighthouse Ag tracks AgTech from around the world.

From doing this tracking, I find it interesting that so many are discussing AI, digital twins, and advanced analytics, with the foundation farm data fed into these systems needing more consistency, completeness, and granularity (sample size) to be usable.

So we are talking about the same thing. AI is a fancy Probability Engine that analyzes data, identifies patterns, and makes weighted predictions. The fact it is trying to identify patterns means that if the input into this process varies (inconsistent errors) due to the data collection method or lack of data, much of the value is lost. Simply put, noisy data equals mostly unusable answers.

Lighthouse Ag teaches customers first to know what they must collect, then to collect the data entirely and consistently and then to worry about using data (AI, BI, reporting). Because of the importance of data collection in the process, Lighthouse Ag chooses cloud-connected automated sensors whenever possible for several reasons.

1) Cheaper: Over time, a farmer will not get faster, cheaper, or more accurate at filling out paper or digital apps. However, the sensors do all three, reducing the cost per data sample over time.

2) Easier: Sensors can make data collection transparent, meaning the farm team can focus less on learning and operating data collection tools and more on understanding the results.

3) Predictable: Humans make random data errors. In contrast, machines make predictable errors, making removing mistakes possible, such as using grain cart readings to correct machine harvest data.

4) Accurate: In probability, the sample size is essential. The bigger, the better, so when sensor costs are low, one can collect from multiple points or fields simultaneously, increasing the sample size significantly and reducing the data errors.

5) Smarter: You only have to look at your phone to see as it continues to do more and more inside a similar packaging. Field sensors are on the same technology path of lower costs, higher sensor capabilities, and more computational ability to send back answers versus raw data (edge computing).
